For the storyteller: tell stories and tell stories

The new ancient art of storytelling is being rediscovered. We find that children’s daily story time at school, in the neighborhood house and at home is a real force for mental and moral good in their lives. We learn that it is possible to educate children through stories.

Storytelling to be a developmental factor in a child’s life must be studied by the storyteller. There are good stories and there are bad stories for children. The story that fits a child’s needs today may not be the right choice for him tomorrow. Some stories teach, some stories only give joy, some stories inspire, some stories just make a child laugh. Each of these phases of history is important. Discovering these particular types of stories, adapting the stories to the child or group of children, and recreating stories for perfect storytelling was my goal in writing this book.

By telling stories to several thousand children and giving lectures to students, I discovered that telling stories is a matter of psychology. The following pages give my new storytelling theory to the teacher or parent.
